First Communion

Frequently Asked Questions

When is First Communion?

Depending on your child’s class assignment, First Communion will be held Saturday, May 11, 2019 or Saturday, May 18, 2019.

What do we need to know about the First Communion banner?

The banner *must* be made by the student.  Banners should be no larger than 14 inches wide by 20 inches long.  It can be made from poster board, construction paper, burlap, felt, or any cloth material.  Please do not use thick board or make the banner too heavy as it will not be able to be hung at the First Communion reception. Banners should include a Bible verse that relates to the Holy Eucharist or God’s love.  Please make certain the student’s name and teacher’s name are written on the back of the banner.  For additional information, please reference your First Communion/First Penance packet.  Banner are due to the Religious Education Office by April 8, 2019.

When do we have to arrive for First Communion?

Students need to meet in their classroom at 10:15 am.  The teachers and staff will line the children and prepare to process to the Church.  Mass begins promptly at 11:00 am.

 Where do we meet?

Students will meet in the school classrooms, as assigned at rehearsal (rehearsal will be on the Thursday at 6:45 prior to First Communion).  Parents and other family members may proceed directly to the church.

How long does the Mass last?

Mass will last until approximately 12:00 pm.  A group picture and reception in the school gym will follow.

 How should my child dress?

Girls should wear white dresses with sleeves or a sweater with dress shoes.  First Communion cannot be distributed in the hand if gloves are worn.

Boys should wear dress slacks, a dress shirt and tie, and dress shoes.

 Can we take pictures?

No photography is allowed in the church or the church vestibule.  You may, however, take photographs outside of the church.  We will have  professional photographers taking candid shots during the Mass and a group picture.   Please complete and return the photography forms provided at rehearsal.

What else do we need to know?

Immediately following the Mass and group pictures, there will be a reception in the gym. Please pick up your child’s First Communion certificate and turn in photography forms during the reception.
